The Far Eastern University-Dr.
Nicanor Reyes School of Medicine Alumni Foundation is a 501(c)3
tax-exempt United States foundation established in New Jersey
in 1972 by medical graduates of the Far Eastern University
Institute of Medicine, formerly in Manila, now at its new
medical campus in West Fairview, Quezon City, Philippines.
(For more details, click on HISTORY on this website).
The name Dr. Nicanor Reyes
(DNR) was added to honor the strongest proponent and founder
of the FEU Institute of Medicine, whose dreams and vision
made this prestigious institution a reality in serving the
nation by producing well-trained, competent and compassionate
men and women in medicine, physicians who have proven themselves
worthy of the Hippocratic distinction in the Philippines and
all over the world, especially in the United States.
A bit of a tongue twister,
these two entities acronym are also somewhat confusing. FEU-NRMF
stands for Far Eastern University Nicanor Reyes Medical Foundation,
the main Philippine corporate entity that owns and manages
the Institute of Medicine and the Medical Center. FEU-DNRSMAF
stands for Far Eastern University School of Medicine Alumni
Foundation, is the association of medical graduates from FEU
Institute of Medicine.
Yes, the FEU-NRMF Board has
appointed an alumnus representative Trustee to its Board since
1983. The first one was Delfin Tan, M.D., 1983-84; Merlin
Cipriano, M.D., 1984-84; Leonardo Ona, M.D., June-November
1985; Oscar Ordinario, M.D., November 1985 to June 1987; Lilia
P. Luna, 1987-88; Merlin Cipriano, M.D., 1988-89; Dr. Dena
C. Cruz, M.D., 1989-91; Evelyn Palypayon 1991-93; Rey de Vega,
M.D., 1993-98; Ramon Rono, M.D. 1998-2003; Edgardo Mendoza,
M.D. 2003-to present. Philip S. Chua, M.D., FACS, FPCS, who was appointed
a Member of the Board of Trustee (1998-2003) to the position
vacated by the late Dean Serafin Juliano, is an alumnus. Dr.
Chua was reappointed by the Board to serve another five-year
term, 2003-2008. While he is not an alumnus representative
Trustee, Dr. Chua’s position gives the alumni two spots
on the Board of FEU-NRMF.
The main goal of this alumni
foundation was to bring closeness and harmony to all medical
graduates of the Far Eastern University, provide them a regular
venue for fostering social get-together and camaraderie, for
schoolmates and batch mates to re-unite and reminisce, and
for a forum for continuing medical education. Above all these,
the other noble objective of the alumni for establishing this
Foundation was to extend regular assistance to our Alma Mater
to help it achieve the distinction of being one of the best,
if not the best, medical schools in the Philippines.
Since its inception, the FEU-DNR SM Alumni Foundation has
extended kinship, inspirational and financial assistance to
the Far Eastern University-Nicanor Reyes Medical Foundation
( school of medicine and medical center). The US alumni Foundation
helped the FEU purchased the Girl’s High School in the
old campus on Moratya Street in Manila, which was used as
the Institute of Medicine. The US alumni Foundation also helped
equipped the X-ray department at the old medical center, and
other sections of the hospital. Many of the individual classes
have donated to the various sections of the medical school
and hospital, like the Pulmonary Section, which was fully
equipped through the donation of more than $20,000 from Class
of ’61. Half a Million US dollars was donated by the
US alumni Foundation for the construction of the new FEU-NRMF
campus, the present site, on West Fairview, Quezon City. Here,
Class ’68 has donated the interiors and furnishings
of the Chapel on the fifth floor of the medical center, near
the Dr. Ricardo L. Alfonso Conference Hall.
Yes, all medical graduates
from the FEU-DNR Institute of Medicine are members of this
Foundation. However, for purposes of registration at its annual
national reunion and convention, and other continuing medical
education events, the alumni are classified as either paid
members or unpaid members. Paid members are those who have
paid their annual dues of $60.00
Yes, most definitely. All
medical alumni of the Far Eastern University are automatically
members of this alumni foundation, just like saying all graduates
of a certain school are obviously alumni of that particular
school.
Interested alumni may contact
our Executive Director, Jane P. Legaspi, M.D., at thelegaspis@yahoo.com
for mail-in membership payment, or they may attend the Annual
Alumni Reunion and Convention (Monte Carlo Hotel and Casino
in Las Vegas for this year, July 13-17, 2005) and pay the
membership fee at the FEU convention Registration Desk.
No, only those who have paid
in the US Foundation are considered paid members of the US
alumni Foundation. Similarly, those who are paid members in
the US foundation and not considered paid members in the FEU-NRMF
Medical Alumni Society, unless they have paid their dues to
this local society. However, all members of the Society are
also bona-fide members of the US Alumni Foundation, and vice
versa. All medical graduates of the FEU are members of both
alumni associations.
Yes, donations to this tax-exempt
501(c) 3 Foundation are tax-deductible, in accordance with,
and to the extent provided by, the Internal Revenue Services
of the United States. This has been the case since the Foundation
came into existence in 1972, where its tax-deductibility privileges
under the laws of the United States have been honored without
question.

side of the Homepage on this website.
Yes, we are scouting for
new (young or old) alumni who are interested to be officers
or board trustees of this Foundation. We, the incumbents,
have been recycling ourselves, with not much choice, because
young and new ones have not come forward to run for office,
and the positions cannot be left unfilled. The present officers
will support and elect fresh leaders. Some of us will even
give way to the young. Do not be bashful. We need new blood.
We need your talent and service. Those interested may send
your email ASAP to scalpelpen@gmail.com or philip@chua.net
Some of the parameters used
in choosing future alumni reunion-convention city are: (1)
Is there an FEU alumni chapter in that city? (2) Is the chapter
leadership applying for or vying to be the next reunion site?
(3) Is the chapter able and willing to sponsor the traditional
reception night dinner? (4) Does the city have large enough
hotel to accommodate our group? (5) Does the city have interesting
amenities, features, and attractive tourist spots and shopping
malls? And, (6) Would the city interest and attract our alumni?
Is it really cheaper to register
for the convention by mail or email compared to doing it during
the reunion?
Yes, you will be saving at
least fifty dollars ($50) by registering by mail or email
rather than wait and do it during the convention onsite? The
other advantage is you are assured of social event tickets
if you register early. These tickets are limited according
to the social function hall occupancy rate, as mandated by
the Fire Department laws for the hotels. Registering early
for the hotel reservation also guarantees you the discounted
rate, and not be forced to be inconveniently billeted at a
distant hotel.
